ABOUT

A wellness app built on soil, not streaks.

Loam is the rich, dark, living soil that gardeners prize. It's a strange name for a meditation app. Once you understand why, you understand the whole thing.

A terracotta bowl filled with rich dark loam soil cradling a tiny honey-gold sprout, teal concentric rings radiating outward on a warm stone surface — a visual metaphor for Loam: the soil in which a meditation practice grows.

The premise

Most wellness apps treat the mind like a performance metric. Track your streak. Hit your goal. Don't break the chain. The implicit model is that you're a machine that needs to be optimized, and the app is the dashboard.

We think that's the wrong metaphor. Nervous systems aren't engines. They're gardens. They respond to seasons, weather, attention, and rest in ways that don't fit on a dashboard. You can't push a garden to grow faster by tracking it harder. You can only tend the conditions and let the growth happen.

Loam is the soil. The app you're holding is not the practice — it's the ground the practice grows in. Your breath, your attention, your quiet moments are what actually matter. We just try to make it easier to come back to them.

What that looks like in the product

  • Streaks pause, they don't break. Miss a day? Your streak holds. Take a rest day on purpose? It counts. The streak is a gentle thread, not a whip.
  • No dark patterns around notifications. We don't guilt-trip you back into the app. We don't invent urgency.
  • Real research, not vibes. Every technique in the app — breathing, meditation, journaling, the 6-phase therapeutic arc used in The Moment — is grounded in peer-reviewed work. We cite it.
  • Core tools stay accessible. Breathing exercises, journaling, mood tracking, and streaks are part of the everyday experience — not gated behind a wall when you need them most.
  • No parasocial chatbot. Sage, our wellness companion, is designed to point you back toward your own life, not to become a substitute for it.

Who we are

Loam is a small, independent team. We're not venture-backed yet and we're not optimizing for daily active users. We're optimizing for whether, six months from now, you feel a little more like yourself. It's a much harder metric to measure, which is probably why most companies don't try.

What we won't do

  • Sell your data. Anywhere. To anyone.
  • Run ads in the app.
  • Build features that maximize engagement at the cost of wellbeing.
  • Pretend the app is a substitute for therapy or medical care.
  • Gamify grief.

How to reach us

We read every email. Product feedback, research we should know about, things we got wrong, things you wish the app did — we want all of it. The contact address is on the homepage.

If you want to know more about what's inside the product, the real-time meditation engine, the Sage companion, and the breathing library are the three best places to start.
