Deep Sleep (Delta 2 Hz)
A 2 Hz binaural beat carried at 100 Hz, targeting the delta band associated with deep slow-wave sleep. Evidence for binaural beats modestly improving sleep onset exists; evidence for them shaping sleep architecture directly is weaker. Best used with headphones, low volume, at bedtime.

What it is
Beat frequency: 2 Hz · Carrier: 100 Hz · Band: 0.5–4 Hz (Delta) · deep sleep range
Two slightly different pure tones — 99 Hz in one ear, 101 Hz in the other — perceived by the brain as a 2 Hz rhythmic pulse. The carrier is low enough to feel like a warm hum, not a bright tone.
Why this frequency
Delta-range binaural beats are the most widely-used audio-entrainment bedtime tool. The mechanism (auditory brainstem response generating a frequency-following effect) is real; whether that measurably changes sleep EEG is still debated. A 2019 meta-analysis (Garcia-Argibay) reported small-to-moderate effects on reported sleep quality across trials, with methodological caveats.
Relevant research: Garcia-Argibay et al., 2019 (Psychological Research).
Best for
- bedtime wind-down
- middle-of-night re-sleep
- layering under sleep stories
One honest caveat
Requires headphones for the binaural effect. Not a sleep cure — if you have persistent insomnia, treat the cause (sleep hygiene, CBT-I) instead of masking it with audio.
How Loam uses binaural beats
Binaural beats work as a layer in Loam — you can pair one with any soundscape or with The Moment, at an independent volume, through headphones. They're not sold as a miracle cure. The honest position: some people find them helpful, the effects are subtle, and the real research base is narrower than the internet claims.
Try it in the Loam app
Deep Sleep (Delta 2 Hz) is one of six binaural presets in the Sound Studio mixer. Download Loam to listen with headphones — they are required for the binaural effect to work.
